Brrrr..It's Windy!!

But diving Grand Cayman has been great! Turkey day was a success both on the water and in the oven. We had some great west wall diving, dive the Kittiwake and even got in a Grand Cayman shore dive or two at Turtle Reef. With Santa's visit just around the corner, spots are filling up quickly on Wall-Nut. Nice to see the visitors back and the beaches, bars and of course dive boats busy again! What a better way to spend Christmas...Grand Cayman diving in the Caribbean...The only ice here is in your sunset cocktail...

Winter Has Arrived!

Late Oct, early Nov has brought some horribly rainy and windy weather to Grand Cayman. Battering waves crashed along 7-mile beach for a little over a week. The late season tropical depression re-arranged the beaches along the west coast, caused the closure of West Bay Rd. for a few days and made diving Grand Cayman challenging even for some more seasoned divers. The wave action also did a little housekeeping by moving the USS Kittiwake towards the wall near Sand Chute. She now sits about 50-60' feet from the reef and listing much harder to port than when she sank in Jan 2011. The schooling fish life appears to be thriving at her new location and the inclement weather also cleaned the algae from the wreck. She looks amazing! With Pirates week about a week away and things starting to get much busier on island, don't forget to reserve your spots for Grand Cayman diving now. We watch the news, we see that horrible white stuff is starting to fall already....We're waiting for you!

Mid-October

So far diving Grand Cayman in October has been should we say "tropical"...Traditionally a rainy and windy month, a few have braved the high seas and soaking wet surface intervals to dive Grand Cayman north wall before the winter winds pick up. 3/4 of the way through the month and we find ourselves with a stationary low pressure just south of us, sure to bring a bunch more wind and rain. Some dive operators have already had to move south so guests were not denied some Grand Cayman diving....
This is a sure sign of a LONG winter ahead!

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You

To all our customers..new and old...our friends and family..Thank You! Cayman Turtle Divers has been open 1 year today! We cannot thank you all enough for all your love and support. We have put the personal touch back into Grand Cayman diving and only with your help was this possible.

Enough of the mushy stuff....October still finds us diving Grand Cayman north wall! The sea could not have been any calmer the past few weeks. We have Spotted Eagle Rays jumping out of the water and doing amazing loop-d-loops under water. We've bumped into a few super friendly turtles, "removed" a few lion fish and relaxed to the max with a couple of charters heading to Kaibo for food and drinks. So as you guys start to feel the winter chill in your bones, think warm thoughts, think escape to dive Grand Cayman!

Hello September

With a couple of fresh coats of paint on her deck and bottom, a good coat of wax on her hull and finally a bit of a rest....Wallnut is ready once again to whisk you out to dive Grand Cayman walls, reefs and wrecks. She can comfortably accommodate 6 divers or 8 snorkelers. Perfect numbers for a most intimate and memorable Grand Cayman diving experience. We're diving Grand Cayman 7 days a week and still have some availability in Sept and Oct so send us an email or give us a call to make your reservation now!

August.....Finished Already!

Thank you very much to everyone who picked us for their diving Grand Cayman adventure this August. We easily put 100 hours on the boat engine this month by making stops at Babylon, Andy's wall and several trips from north to west to dive the Kittiwake. We go where the best diving is, no matter where it is! Grand Cayman diving will take a short break (like the next 3-4 days) so we can give Wall-Nut a little cosmetic attention. We plan on putting on a new bottom job, waxing the hull (so she can go even faster!) and painting the interior. Hopefully mother nature will cooperate!
We have some availability in Sept and Oct so come dive Grand Cayman with us and enjoy the late summer specials on airfare and hotels while they still last.

Thursday, August 18, 2011

We're midway through August and the Grand Cayman diving has been amazing. Last weekend we ran into 34 Spotted Eagle rays on Leslie's Curl...not joking....a school of 15 swimming in formation followed by a school of 19! The got close enough so we could see them smiling. Another close encounter that day was with a 7-8' Reef shark. It was patrolling the top edge of the wall on Princess Penny's. Again, close enough to see it was a SHE and that she had a hook and leader stuck in her lip...Diving Grand Cayman this time of year is so exciting!...Still great airfare and hotel prices all summer long so don't waste any more time....come dive Grand Cayman....soon the sharks will go hide for the winter!

Monday, August 1, 2011

With another summer month come and gone, we continue to have some spectacular Grand Cayman diving! Just last week we not only encountered about 4 more hammerhead sharks but we keep running into massive schools of spotted eagle rays. Numbers range from 5-18 in a single school! After speaking to a couple of guys from the Department of Environment, they confirmed that the frequent shark sightings are most likely from the rays spawning in the area. Moving into August, we expect the diving Grand Cayman will impress even the most critical of fish finders. We have a couple of tropical depressions looming but that makes for cheap airfare and hotels people! Don't think about it...book it....and dive Grand Cayman with a couple of turtle heads!

We seem to have the beat on the sharks as the middle of the summer rolls thru...2 sharks this afternoon while diving Grand Cayman north wall site Tarpon Alley East. First shark cruising along the wall was a HAMMERHEAD! Hooray! She swam with us just about until we reached the pinnacle, then disappeared into the blue. Second shark was a good size Reef patrolling the shallow part of the reef. Think Richter got pretty close but haven't seen any of the photos yet. On your next visit to dive Grand Cayman, check out Caybrew's new White Tip Lager. Both Stuey and I are in agreement that it is most tasty. Plus, 5cents is donated towards shark conservation with every can you purchase!

WOW! Diving Grand Cayman the last few days has been stunning! Yesterday morning we ventured away from the more frequently visited sites and tied up to north wall sites Andy's wall and Penny's arch. We came across 3 reef sharks about 5 minutes into the wall dive, then finished it off with spearing 16 lion fish on the shallow. 3 of these lucky victims became our appetizer later that evening compliments of Morgan's Harbour restaurant. With wind conditions still prime to dive Grand Cayman north wall, we tied up on a pretty new site known as Tarpon Tunnels. Unfortunately no tarpon but again about 5 minutes in and we found ourselves about two fin-kicks away from a 8' female hammerhead! Grand Cayman diving in the summer is getting hotter by the day people! Stop wasting time and book your diving NOW!

Ok Turtle Heads...We know its been a while since our last update but we've been diving Grand Cayman in search of the illusive summer time hammer heads. We've tried all the normal superstitious stuff like don't mention the word shark on the boat...and the not so normal of mentioning shark as many times a possible.......FINALLY the streak is over!
Our Grand Cayman diving adventure Tuesday afternoon took us to Tarpon Alley East and it's like she had been waiting there all summer. A beautiful 10-12' female hammer head swam so slowly from the wall into the shallows right past us. Happy Birthday Sara! So if you haven't booked your trip to dive Grand Cayman with us yet, do it before these beautiful creatures disappear into the deep blue again!

Sunday, June 19, 2011

Mid-way through June and diving Grand Cayman is heating up! Water temps are now 84F and rising. Visibility the last few days has been amazing. From 100' you could clearly see the logo and phone number on the side of Wall-Nut. Even though we had to dodge a few thunderstorms, Grand Cayman diving on the west wall has been spectacular. NW point and Royal Palms Ledge have finally been put back and well worth the wait! Nurse shark, multiple eel sightings, several turtles and a few more lion fish to keep things exciting. Couple of night dives were also most impressive with a trio of octopus and an arrow crab with blood worms skewered on his head! So Stuey wasn't lying!

Sunday, June 5, 2011

So far June's Grand Cayman dive adventures are starting to heat up! We have done a few amazing dive the Kittiwake that is sure to impress even the most particular diver. She's been resting on the bottom for only 6 months and is home to such diverse fish life. With the weather in the tropics starting to make the summer change, we're a bit surprised to find ourselves diving Grand Cayman west wall. Hoping to get back north in time for some hammer head sharks and so "Stuey the Sting Ray Whisperer" can keep up his job of bringing in formations of 10-15 at a time! Summer time is also a great time for you to snorkel Sting Ray City while we fire up the bbq right on the boat! Great specials for divers and non-divers so don't waste time booking your Grand Cayman diving adventure!

May Update

First couple of weeks in May have been action packed! We have snorkel Sting Ray City Sandbar and dive Sting Ray City just about once each day of the month! Stuey has done his best to give the rays and eels a workout. He still assures us that his favorite all-time dive is Sting Ray City. We have been diving Grand Cayman north wall in search of this summer's first hammerhead with no luck yet. A few days ago however, we were 4 for 4 with nurse sharks on every dive of the day! Biggest one was about 10' and let me pull him by his tail from his hiding place! Amazing! This week our Grand Cayman diving is taking us back west for a few days and see how things are progressing on the Kittiwake. Amazing to think she's only been down since 5 Jan 2011 and so many critters have made this most impressive wreck home.

Diving Grand Cayman

Very special thanks to Jim, Ken, Dean and Brad for coming down and taking full advantage of their Grand Cayman diving experience. 4 action packed mornings of north wall, west wall, Kittiwake and Sting Ray City dives produced tons of fish, turtles and eagle rays. I took a sting from a lion fish on my funny bone....OUCH! No swelling and a little discolored. Felt like someone hit me on the elbow with a hammer. The May weather has started a bit windy but the forecast is expected to have us diving Grand Cayman north wall again by Friday! Kelly even says a Sunday morning Grand Cayman dive is in her future. YIPPEE!

Late Spring Update

Most of our Grand Cayman diving has been done north side the last couple of weeks. Stuey has been the "Eagle Ray Whisperer", coming across schools of 14, 13 and 9! The new DOE lion fish spears are much better than the 1st generation making the hunting that much more exciting. We finished up a couple of dive certifications and referrals last week for Norah Gourlay and Anh Huynh. Congratulations ladies! You did a fantastic job and we hope that your travels bring you back to dive Grand Cayman with us again in the near future.

Still no sharks. Call it superstition, but we blame this on all of those that keep using the shark and hammerhead words on the boat before dives. You know who you are!

Diving Grand Cayman

Today's Grand Cayman dive was one of those days that most divers dream of. Stuey ran into 14 Spotted Eagle Rays! A group of 5 and a group of 6 merged just feet away from the divers on Lemon wall, followed by 3 other solo rays also making appearances. The summer is starting to heat up down here so book a flight and come visit us for some unmatched Grand Cayman diving! What are you waiting for?!

March Update

Hello warm south winds! Summer is hopefully right around the corner and Grand Cayman diving is already showing signs of change. We had several close encounters of Eagle Rays this week and a couple of really friendly and inquisitive turtles. We have started to clear the many lion fish that have taken up residence on the north wall during our very windy March. Congratulations to Reston and Renick Randall, Tommy, Jeff, Amy and Julie Keller and Zoe Barnhart for completing their Open Water certifications! Great job gang!

We haven't gotten much use out of the boat BBQ yet so make your reservations now and we can go play in the sun and sea all day!

Finally!!

The wind had finally subsided and we have moved Wall-Nut back to the north side. This weekend diving Grand Cayman will have us exploring sites like Eagle Ray Pass, Leslie's Curl and my favorites Main Street and Haunted House. This morning our Grand Cayman dive site was Tarpon Tunnels, newly installed this past summer. After getting several pictures of the Keller family leaving a most awesome swim thru, we turned right along the wall in hopes of running into a hammerhead shark. We had no luck! These sharks are usually seen when you dive Grand Cayman in the summer but occasionally we get a close encounter in the early spring too. Many more days to come so fingers crossed!

March Update

The wind has been relentless, so diving Grand Cayman in early to mid March has been cold! The water temps are still hovering around 79F and we are eagerly awaiting the summer temps to arrive. So far two night dives this month that produced fantastic wildlife. We decided to dive Grand Cayman west wall site, Paradise and dropped right in on a very happy octopus! The dive continued to impress with many huge parrot fish sleeping under the battered pieces of the Oro Verde Wreck. So many shrimps peering back into our light beams and quite a few dog-tooth snapper using the lights to hunt.

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

Pete we're all waiting on your Kittiwake pictures please and thank you!

Lion Fish, Whale Sharks and Manta Rays....OH MY!

Just Kidding. But diving Grand Cayman has been cold! Guess March has come in like a lion this year and brought some very gusty winds and surface temps. The water is crystal clear and warmer than the air! We have been diving on the west side enjoying sites like Orange Canyon, Big Tunnel and Trinity Caves. We finally got Pete Richter to dive the Kittiwake and he loved it! Two Goliath Grouper have taken up residence near the rudder. A hugh school of Horse-eyed Jacks, loads of Chromis, Wrasse and Soldier Fish and found near the wheelhouse and bow section. Oh and Stu found a copy of Hustler magazine floating around somewhere inside.....Not sure what issue it was....

Dive, Dive, Dive

This past week of Grand Cayman diving has again pleased many bubble blowers. On the Kittiwake one of the biggest schools around of Horse-eyed Jacks has made the wheelhouse their home. Several Spotted Eagle-rays were seen flying in formation along the north wall. We are convinced that the lobsters know season is over because they were fighting for holes and crawling around everywhere! This March diving Grand Cayman is sure to be exciting, especially as we slowly move operations north side for the summer. Don't wait......Come dive Grand Cayman now! Wall-Nut is waiting.....

Dive Grand Cayman

Still windy conditions but diving Grand Cayman has never been more exciting. We have been diving the Kittiwake the last few days and starting to notice more life even though she has been down for about 6 weeks now. A Goliath Grouper has made the giant prop and rudder a great napping place. While soldier fish, sharp-nosed puffers and chromis still tuck inside the nooks and crannies. Stu said he found an old Hustler floating around during a dive and it looked like it was from long ago. Maybe more treasure will start to float to the top for us to enjoy! A break in the wind will allow us to move north and dive Grand Cayman north wall for the next few days. Probably dive Wall-Nut around on Sunday. Not looking forward to all the lion fish we will see. Certain they have taken advantage of the past 10-12 windy days and multiplied!
We would like some feedback from you guys too. Would anyone be interested in doing 1-tank dawn dives for US$75? Great opportunity to get a dive in before work or better your chances of shark sightings as they move with the tide!
Talk to you soon Turtle Heads!

Kittiwake Crazy!

So we're taking advantage of the windy weather and diving Grand Cayman west wall, especially NW point as much as possible. Orange Canyon has been spectacular! We have had more fish life and extra great conditions making every one of our Grand Cayman diving excursions most memorable! Diving the Kittiwake today was extra special because of the visitors to the wreck. We had about a 50lb goliath grouper, a magnificent school of horse eyed jacks, and two large cubera snapper that followed us around for most of the dive. Also making homes on the wreck are schools of juvenile chromis, sharped nosed puffers and squirrel fish. On our safety stop we had the pleasure of a spotted eagle ray gliding across the sandy bottom. Most of the time we are diving Grand Cayman west wall the conditions are perfect, the fish life most abundant and now the Kittiwake is providing not only a giant attraction to explore but generations of new residents to observe. What are you waiting for people! Book Now!

Another Shot of Winter

After some fantastic days diving Grand Cayman north wall the winter weather is about to set in......Well for at least the next week! We have moved Wall-Nut around west, ahead of the 20-25kt NE winds that have been predicted. Hopefully when this weather passes we will be able to dive Grand Cayman north wall straight through to the spring and summer months! Yeah Right! For now we will be exploring the west side walls, reefs and wrecks which are sure to bring some amazing wildlife and excitement. Another bonus of the west are the convenient beach pick ups which we offer at almost all of the 7-mile beach condos and hotels. Don't forget to make your Spring Break reservations early this year and get a 10% discount on your final tab.
Come on....you know you want to!

How Lucky!

Old Man Winter spared us yet again and allowed us to dive Grand Cayman north wall.....in February! We came across 4 super friendly Spotted Eagle-rays. They cruised in formation along the top edge of Black Forest, one Grand Cayman dive site not to miss! Second dive was on Lemon wall.  We got lucky again with a free swimming moray eel, more eagle rays and a great macro spot of a rare Leopard Flat-worm. Diving Grand Cayman continues to impress even when those we love and care about are stuck in the ice and snow. Come for a visit and thaw out people!

Dive Grand Cayman January Wrap Up

We are wrapping up another spectacular month of Grand Cayman diving. We sure too advantage of the weather allowing us several windows to dive Cayman north wall. Some of the Cayman dive sites we explored like Babylon, Andes wall and Eagle Ray Pass produced some great wildlife and amazing coral and sponge life. When we had to dive Cayman West wall the excitement continued. Retired US Navy Submarine Rescue ship the USS Kittiwake has been quite the attraction. With several decks to explore and many fish still yet to move in, this Cayman dive site is sure to be the talk of the dive community for some time. February is right around the corner and we hope that everyone can find the time to get away from the snow and let us show you what Grand Cayman Diving has to offer!

Monday, January 24, 2011

The Nor'wester blew threw in just a day but we have moved back to the West.

This morning our Grand Cayman dive site was Eagle Ray Rock on the SW corner of Grand Cayman. Stunning! The sponges and corals so unspoiled and healthy. The fish life was amazing with schools of Chromis and Silversides. A few unusual looking Sea Cucumbers crawling across the sand and some inquisitive Southern Sting rays feeding on the bottom dwellers.

The afternoon was action packed! We dove Grand Cayman newest dive site, retired US Navy submarine rescue ship Kittiwake. Exploring the first 3 decks included seeing a re-compression chamber, generators, mirrors still on the walls of the bathrooms and a giant stainless steel wheel in the bridge! Can't wait for the big fish to start making her their home.

North Wall Extravaganza!

We wrapped up another fantastic week and that's right, diving Grand Cayman's North Wall! The weather allowed us to travel as far as Babylon and Andes Wall in only 40 minutes time. The fish life was amazing, the visibility as far as the eye could see and still very comfortable both surface and water temperatures. We were also able to clean about 50 or so of those pesky lion fish from the reef. Being able to dive Grand Cayman north side in January was such a treat!
